Creating The Perfect Capsule Wardrobe In 3 Steps

You can also watch the video form of this blogpost, to learn what old money sweaters you should be wearing this fall, here:

The less money you spend on clothes, the better wardrobe you can build.

By the end of this article you will know not only how to build a perfect wardrobe in 3 easy to follow steps, but also how to adapt it to your own personality and style.

Step 1: The less money you spend, the better

Did you know that you can double the amount of outfits you can make by adding a single item to your wardrobe?...

...I'll get to that a bit later.

First of all, what do I mean with "the less amount of money you spend, the better wardrobe you can build"?

To understand that, first we must go over what a capsule wardrobe is and how you can build one.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe basically means that you have a limited amount of items, but all those items can be combined to make a lot of different outfits.

A capsule wardrobe should have anywhere from 6-50+ items.

You see, the whole magic of a capsule wardrobe is that you have a limited amount of items. However, you should never sacrifice quality.

For example: A $100 shirt made out of wool or flannel will always be better than a $10 shirt made out of polyester.

So, buy the least amount of clothes, but of the highest quality possible.

Now you might be wondering what you should be looking out for when buying clothes for a capsule wardrobe.

Fit and Quality are the most important things.

You have to make sure you are buying clothes that fit you perfectly and that you will be able to constantly wear for many months or even years.

All the clothes you will ever buy as part of a capsule wardrobe are included into one of four categories.

Starting from the bottom up:

  • The shoes: Often the most overlooked item that a man will wear. Usually men will wear only one pair of shoes every day regardless of their outfit which will lead them to becoming worn out

  • The pants: And no, wearing jeans every day won't do

  • The inner layer: T-shirt, Shirts and Polos.

  • The outer layer: Jackets and Knitwear.

But, just knowing the four categories is not enough.

If you have, let's say, 10 different shirts but only one pair of pants, you'll be able to make a lot less outfits than with 5 shirts and 5 pants.

Assuming you have 1 pair of shoes and 1 jacket:

  • 10 shirts + 1 pant = 10 x 1 outfits = 10 outfits

  • 5 shirts + 5 pants = 5 x 5 outfits = 25 outfits

I would really only consider a capsule wardrobe a wardrobe in which the amount of outfits you can make is bigger than the amount of items in the wardrobe.

By that logic, a capsule wardrobe with less than 6 items is impossible.

As Steve Harvey would say: Any one of those pants should go with any one of those shirts.

You see, the whole magic of the capsule wardrobe is that all items can be combined.

If you have only 16 items in your capsule wardrobe, you will be able to make 256 different items.

Just think about it, every shoe goes with every pair of pants, every pair of pants works with every shirt and every shirt works with every jacket.

And if we take into account the fact that the jacket layer is optional (because it is), that number grows to over 320 outfits.

That's almost one different item for every day of the year with only 16 items in your wardrobe.

And I've got another trick for you: If you add one single extra item you can get that number all the way to 500+ different outfits.

What's that item? A coat.

You have 320 different items for the warm seasons. Simply add that item and you have 500+.

This is of course only with the rule that you can only take a coat over an outer layer. If you take a coat directly over an inner layer (ex. coat over shirt) that number is even higher.

Step 2: Finding your style

Just building any capsule wardrobe won't do.

That wardrobe - every one of those outfits should express your inner personality and style.

How do you do that? You just have to find out which one of these 5 styles works for you:

  • Smart Casual: These are the guys who prefer to wear jeans, leather jackets and t-shirts. Just by adding a pair of leather sneakers, a leather jacket or a polo to your casual outfit, you can elevate it and dress smart casual.

  • Business Casual: Now you will have your sport coats, your blazers. You are not wearing a full suit just yet, but you are not casual either.

  • Preppy Style: Includes a bunch of knitwear, sport coats, blazers and that overall look that ivy league students, especially in the 20th century, gave off. I personally consider "Old Money" a newer adaptation of "Preppy".

  • Business Formal: The guys who wear suits, ties and leather shoes every day.

  • The Classic Gentleman: A dandy who loves to dress up; he will have an entire array of tie clips, hats, pins, etc.

These are the 5 types. Now you have to figure out to which one you belong.

And how do you do that? I have a quiz waiting for you atop of my website. You can take it for free right here.

Disclaimer: All the information you are reading today comes directly from my new book: "The Confident Man's Playbook: How To Become Attractive Through Style". Step 3: Choose 3-5 colours.

So, now that you know what the capsule wardrobe is, and that you have to find your style first, let's go over how to actually build the capsule wardrobe.

You see, there are some rules that you should be aware of.

First of all, you have to focus on the quality of the items. Go for natural fabrics rather than synthetics. The fit is also very important, but the most important aspect of all are the colours.

You see, in order to be able to build a capsule wardrobe, you have to never go beyond 3-5 different colours.

And those colour should either be earth tones or neutral colours - because neutral colours all work together.

Also, you should always focus on the essentials.

So, what are the essentials?:

  1. Shoes: Chelsea Boots, Dress Shoes, Loafers, Leather Sneakers

  2. Pants: Jeans, Chinos, Trousers, Shorts

  3. Inner Layer: Polos, Button-down Shirts, T-shirts, Knitwear

  4. Outer Layer: Jackets (Sport Coats, Blazers), Leather Jackets, Bomber Jackets, Knitwear (can be either)

Now you know how to build a capsule wardrobe. You know that you need to choose 3-5 colours, find your style, and buy the same amount of items in each one of those 4 categories. Also, throw in a coat to double the amount of outfits that you can build.
